Sept 15 is the Mid-Autumn Festival — it’s celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, when the moon is at its absolute fullest.

It’s a tradition that dates back thousands of years in China, while it’s also recognised in Korea peninsula and Vietnam. One of the most celebrated and traditional aspects of the festival is the “moon cake”, and families and friends like to come together and try different types and flavors.

Such was the excitement surrounding the festival, it was listed as an “intangible cultural heritage” in 2006 and a public holiday two years later. Aside from the moon-gazing and the moon cakes, different regions of the country have their own specific traditions.
