China opens new college to train professionals of global governance

BEIJING — The School of Global Governance was inaugurated on April 9 at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), aiming to train more multilingual professionals with global vision and cross-cultural communication proficiency.

“Through innovative training model, the school is expected to cultivate talents who are proficient in international rules and at least two working languages of the United Nations,” said BFSU President Peng Long.

The school will carry out research on international organizations and provide intellectual support for China’s participation in international organizations and international affairs, according to Peng.

First of its kind in China, the school offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. It grew out of an education reform pilot program launched in 2010. Some former graduates have been employed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, Pan American Health Organization, and United Nations Office at Geneva.

“Expansion of the program into a school is in response to the education opening-up requirement and demand for talents by the Belt and Road Initiative,” said Chen Haiyan, head of the BFSU publicity department.

Established in 1941, BFSU is known as “the cradle of diplomats” in China.
